Stanford alumnae and sisters Kiley and Jamie Neushul led the United States over Hungary, 16-9, in the World University Games women’s water polo championship match.

It was the first gold and just second medal ever for the USA women’s water polo team in the Summer Universiade.

The Neushul sisters scored four goals apiece as the Americans built a 10-3 lead at half and played even for the remainder of the contest.

UC Irvine’s Mary Brooks added three goals. Brooks was the tournament’s leading sprinter, winning 29 of 31 opportunities.

Goalie Mia Rycraw faces seven shots on goal, stopping six.

Team Canada was a 16-8 winner over Australia in the fifth-place match held Tuesday.

California’s Kindred Paul and Emma Wright, Pacific’s Kyra Christmas, Southern California’s Hayley McKelvey and Indiana alum Shae Fournier each scored twice in the contest.

Baseball: The United States was awarded the silver medal, its first-ever in the sport at the World University Games, after falling to Japan, 10-0, in the championship game.

Men’s basketball: Purdue took silver after falling to Lithuania, 85-74, in the championship game Tuesday.

Men’s volleyball: Lewis University sophomore Ryan Coenen and Ohio State’s Miles Johnson led the United States to a 3-0 sweep of Lativa in the 17th-place match.  Coenen won 13 points and Johnson won 9.

Men’s water polo: Pacific’s Ben Stevenson scored five goals for the United States in an 18-8 win over Canada for ninth place.

The next 24 hours

The final medals of the World University Games will be decided Wednesday as the gold, silver and bronze will be awarded in the men’s water polo team tournament.
