Everyone has an opinion on why Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008, but the latest point of view may just be one to examine more closely.

Hank Haney, Tiger Woods swing coach from 2004-10, was conducting his SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio Show on Monday, according to Golf.com, when a caller asked about Woods’ workout habits.

That’s when Haney responded with a stunning assessment of the current shortcomings in Woods’ game: Woods is simply not spending enough time on the putting green because he’s too enthralled in his workout regimen.

“My opinion is he did too much of that,” Haney said. “He does a lot of the gym stuff. I know you need to do some for golf, no doubt about it. You need to be in shape, you need to avoid injury, but my opinion is he really overdoes that. … I look at him now and a lot of guys mentioned on the telecast, he looks bigger this year. I think Peter Kostis mentioned that. He looks like he’s gained more muscle mass. When he was thinner and younger he was actually faster then. The strength maybe helps you get out of the rough but I’d agree that he’s overdone it. But he loves to work out.”

Woods missed the secondary cut at the Farmers Insurance Open last week, shooting a third-round 79. According to CBSSports.com, Woods practiced his putting in his backyard before traveling to Dubai to play in a challenge event Tuesday. He finished with a 1-under 71.

“I didn’t change anything,” said Woods, CBSSports.com reported. “I know I’m not that far off. I just happened to have one bad day and that happens.”

Haney, however, chastised Woods for his lack of work on putting.

“Let me tell you what his real key to golf is, it’s getting out there and practicing his putting. He had five three-putts in 54 holes at Torrey Pines and you’re not going to fix that in the gym. Now Tiger Woods is the best lag putter I’ve ever seen. When he personally asks me, ‘Hank, who is the best putter?’ I said, ‘You are. You’re the best putter and Jack Nicklaus is the best.’ The two greatest putters ever because they’re the greatest pressure putters. But Tiger’s lag putting is phenomenal. For him to go out and three-putt five times at Torrey Pines, I can’t even believe it. There’s just no way that he put in the time on the putting green and practicing. It’s impossible. He’s too good. His stroke is too consistent. He’s too great a putter. So I’m right there with you. Less time in the gym. He’s beat himself up, no doubt about it, but less time in the gym, more time on the putting green. There’s just no way he should three-putt five times. That’s just ridiculous. He’s Tiger Woods. That just can’t happen.”
