Misfortunes continue to hunt Jason Verrett as the cornerback suffered another injury that could force him to miss the upcoming NFL season.

Verrett, who plays for the Los Angeles Chargers, has been tormented with injury problems since being drafted by the team in 2014. According to the Chargers, Verrett got hurt after a conditioning test on Friday morning. However, the team did not reveal the nature of Verrett’s current injury.

According to sources close to the situation, the Chargers are concerned that Verrett tore his Achilles tendon. The 27-year-old Verrett missed 15 games last year and 12 games in the 2016 season after suffering knee injuries. He made his promising return to the Chargers’ lineup recently to attend full practices.

Since making it through the Pro Bowl in 2015, Verrett has been unable to remain healthy with three of his four NFL seasons ending early due to injuries. Verrett, who underwent surgery to repair his ACL in 2016, played just one game last season before requiring another knee surgery.

Massive Loss For The Chargers

When healthy, Verrett has been a proven threat on the corner end, as the former 25th overall pick posted solid numbers of 42 tackles, 12 passes defended, and three interceptions in 14 games played in 2015. He is set to enter the final year of his five-year rookie contract.

His remarkable campaign caught the attention of the league, with some analysts even saying that Verrett could be the next great lockdown corner. Nonetheless, a series of injuries in the past few seasons halted his progress. After a stellar 2015, Verrett has played in no more than six games in his other three seasons.

Not Only Verrett

Earlier this offseason, the Chargers also suffered a major blow after losing tight end Hunter Henry for the 2018 season due to a torn ACL. Verrett was expected to give the Chargers a massive boost in the second unit alongside Desmond King, Adrian Philips, Derwin James, Trevor Williams, and two-time Pro Bowler Casey Hayward.

With Verrett likely gone for the 2018 season, the Chargers will now rely on the heroics of Williams, who is listed as the former’s replacement in the team’s early depth chart. Williams, who appeared in 16 games last season, registered two interceptions and 56 tackles in 2017.

Bleacher Report’s Alec Nathan added that should Verrett missed the entire season, the Chargers are also expected to lean on Williams and King to put the stops on opposing receivers. Verrett competed in just six games as a rookie after suffering a shoulder injury.
