GRAND PRAIRIE, TX. — The last four teams remaining at the DII Baseball Championship waited out a weather delay that lasted more than two hours. Championship baseball was still played.
UC San Diego got their revenge on St. Thomas Aquinas. The Spartans downed UC San Diego with a bottom of the 12th comeback win. The Tritons made sure that didn’t happen again on Thursday.
Kyle Goodbrand went nine innings, hurling a five-hit shutout. The Tritons scored runs in six-straight innings, opening up a 10-run lead. Alex Eliopulos went 3-for-4 with three RBI while JD Hearn added an early two-run bomb to get things going.
The nightcap was yet another pitcher’s duel for Colorado Mesa. West Chester’s Eric Close hurled six shutout innings, while Mesa’s Taylor Prokopis countered with five one-run innings. A Robert Knox single scored the only run, and with two strong bullpen performances it was all that was needed.
UC San Diego and St. Thomas Aquinas will face off in the rubber match Friday at 4 PM EST. NCAA.com will have live, pregame to postgame, with all the day’s festivities, so check back here for live updates all day long.
This tournament is wide open. Delta State was the only No. 1 seed to advance from its region. Quincy, Lindenwood, St. Thomas Aquinas and UC San Diego all present compelling underdog stories. West Chester and North Georgia are two of the hottest teams in DII. And Colorado Mesa hasn’t stopped hitting the cover off the ball since February.
